New item conveyor belts ensure ESD-safe handling

Prevention is better than cure

item is expanding its product portfolio with ESD-safe conveyor belts. These ensure that electrostatic charges that have built up on components are safely dissipated, thereby potentially preventing serious damage.

Many electric components are highly sensitive to electrostatic discharges. What makes this particularly problematic is that, although even very low voltages can damage components, humans can only actually sense electrostatic discharges of around 3,500 volts and more. As a result, the consequences of low-level discharges usually go completely undetected. After all, there’s no way of telling with the naked eye whether or not components have sustained long-term damage. Trying to detect that damage is a very time-consuming and cost-intensive process, which leads us back to a well-known saying – prevention is better than cure!

Dissipating electrical charges through ESD-safe conveyor belts

To stop electrostatic discharges from causing damage, item prefers to dissipate charges slowly through the conveyor belts. That is why the new item Conveyor Belt System is now also available with ESD-safe flat conveyor belts and timing belts. These ensure that sensitive components get the best protection possible in line with IEC/DIN EN 61340 5 1. Accumulating Flat Conveyor Belt PUR ESD has an especially robust surface that exhibits reduced static friction. When combined with the already available accumulating Timing Belt T5 PA, companies have an effective means of preventing damage caused by electrostatic discharges. Charges are safely routed to the earthing system of the motor using timing belt guide strips or a stainless steel sheet under the flat conveyor belts. item Flat Conveyer Belts PUR ESD are available in eight system widths from 40 to 400 mm. ESD-safe Timing Belt T5 comes in widths of 40 and 80 mm. They can also be ordered as part of the familiar double timing belt conveyors and double flat belt conveyors, or as individual components for the creation of customised conveyor sections. In addition, item offers a wide range of ESD-safe components, including earth connection points. Bespoke conveyor belts can be engineered with ease using the item Engineeringtool. By making the most of this rules-based software, it can take users just a few minutes to design a system that dovetails perfectly with their requirements and can be integrated into existing systems and facilities.
